Found on the eastern bank of the Slave River, the unique salt plains cover a 250 sq km area in the Slave River Lowlands. The vast patches of salt are created by underground springs, which transport salt from below. The plains support plants normally only found in marine environments and are a prime habitat for bison and waterfowl. Visitors can view the expansive salt deposits from the Salt Plains Viewpoint off Highway 5. A short trail and interpretive exhibit are accessed at the viewpoint.
Located on Highway 5 in the north of the park, the Wetlands Pull-off is the trail head for the short Wetlands Interpretive Trail to a lookout over the vast boreal landscape. The easy trail features interpretive signs about the endangered whooping cranes that nest in the area.
