• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide to Historic Sites & Interpretive Centres in Wood Buffalo National Park, Alberta.
Located in Fort Chipewyan, this visitor centre offers information about activities, attractions and history of Wood Buffalo National Park, including exhibits and audiovisual presentations. Those venturing into the backcountry of the park must register here. The visitor centre is open Monday to Friday year round, and on some weekends during summer.
This abandoned bison station was first used in 1957 to corral bison for disease testing and meat slaughter. The final bison round-up here occurred in 1972 for anthrax vaccinations. Today, visitors will see remains of the historic corrals and buildings. The station is set in expansive meadows, and the surrounding marshlands are a haven for birds. Wolves and bison are also frequently spotted here. Tenting is permitted in the meadows (pack as much water as possible). Sweetgrass Station can be reached via a rugged 12-km hike from Sweetgrass Landing on the south bank of Peace River.
