Welcome to Wabasca!
Wabasca is a hamlet located in
Alberta's
North, approximately 123 km (76 mi) northeast of
Slave Lake.
Also referred to as Wabasca-Desmarais, Wabasca comes from
the Cree word —wapuskau— which means —white rapid— in reference to the
Wabasca
River, and
Desmarais was the first missionary in the area, Father Alphonse
Desmarais. The community is sometimes
referred to as the —Heart of Oil Country— due to the production of
petroleum in the area. Its population consists mostly of First
Nation members and there are a few Reserves in the immediate
surrounding area. The small hamlet offers amenities such as a medical
facility, community college and a public library, as well as several
recreational opportunities that can be
enjoyed year round in the surrounding area. Visitors and
locals alike can spend a day hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, swimming,
skating or quadding.
