Welcome to High Prairie!
The Beaver Nation were among the early settlers to this wild and pristine region
of
Northern Alberta. They
dubbed the area Muskatayosipi in their native Cree tongue, which translates to
High Prairie in English. In later years, the community became a stopping point
for gold-hungry prospectors on their way to the
Klondike
during the infamous Gold Rush. Nowadays, this thriving town hosts a variety of
events throughout the year, including two popular rodeos: the
High
Prairie District Amateur Rodeo in May and the
Elks
Pro Rodeo, each July. The northern location has spawned a thriving tourism
industry, and the famed Aurora Borealis, also known as the
Northern
Lights, offer a dazzling and enchanting vision on crisp winter nights. During
the summer months, there are several campgrounds in the vicinity for those looking
to bask in the natural beauty of Alberta's North. History buffs will find a bounty
of intriguing artifacts at the
High
Prairie District Museum, while sports fans will enjoy the high energy hockey
tournaments held throughout the year at the
Sports
Palace Arena.
